On the Road

Columbia Pictures is the Hollywood studio that Sal visits on his 1947 return journey from California. He retrieves his rejected original there, turning a brief stop into a concrete reckoning with the manuscript he had carried west as part of his hopes for a writing life.

The Hollywood visit

After leaving Terry in Sabinal, Sal walks to the railroad telegraph office to collect a money order sent from New York. His aunt has saved him again, but the money is not enough to take him all the way home. A fast ride with a California cowboy-band fiddler brings him from Sabinal to Los Angeles in four hours, and the driver drops him directly in front of Columbia Pictures. Sal runs inside and picks up his rejected original before buying a bus ticket to Pittsburgh, where he expects to work out how to pay for the remainder of the journey.

Manuscript and departure

The studio visit belongs to a compressed sequence of retrieval and departure: Sal recovers the manuscript, then prepares to leave Hollywood that same night. With four hours before his bus, he buys bread and salami, makes ten sandwiches for the cross-country trip, and has only a dollar left. He sits behind a Hollywood parking lot spreading mustard on his lap as premiere searchlights cut across the sky. The contrast is sharp: the bright machinery of Hollywood spectacle overhead, and Sal’s improvised provisions and rejected work in the foreground.

Place in the return journey

Columbia Pictures appears not as a workplace or a source of success, but as a stop on Sal’s route east. The manuscript’s rejection is explicit, while the scene gives no further account of its contents or of the studio’s decision. Sal carries the original onward only in the sense that he has retrieved it; his immediate objective is now to get home, and his return continues by bus across the Southwest and Midwest. The studio’s significance is therefore concentrated in this encounter between an unrealized Hollywood career and the practical, hurried journey that replaces it.
